How Carbon Monoxide Detectors Work

Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas, making it extremely dangerous. Carbon monoxide detectors are designed to sense the presence of this gas in the air.

Can a Fire Alarm Detect Carbon Monoxide?

The short answer is that most traditional fire alarms cannot detect carbon monoxide. The sensing mechanisms in ionization and photoelectric fire alarms are specifically designed to detect the physical presence of smoke particles. They do not have the ability to identify the chemical composition of gases like carbon monoxide.

Carbon monoxide is a gas that exists at the molecular level, and it is not detectable by the light – scattering or current – disruption principles used in fire alarms.
